Day of Belarusian Written Language

The Day of  Belarusian Writing Language is a national holiday annually celebrated on the first Sunday of September.

Traditionally cities that are considered historical centers of culture, science, literature and printing host this holiday.

For the first time, the Day of  Belarusian Writing Language was held in the ancient city of Polotsk in 1994.

Later on the celebrations were organized in such historically significant cultural centers of Belarus as Turov, Novogrudok, Nesvizh, Orsha, Pinsk, Zaslavl, Mstislavl, Mir, Kamenets, Postavy, Shklov, Borisov, Smorgon, Khoiniki, Gantsevichi, Glubokoe, Bykhov, Zaslavl, Shchuchin, Rogachev, Ivanovo, Slonim.

In 2020, Belynichi city of the Mogilev region will host the Day of  Belarusian Writing Language.

Main idea behind this holiday is careful preservation and enhancement of the spiritual heritage of Belarus, promotion of national cultural traditions, showing the connection between Belarusian customs,Slavonic roots and the present, demonstration of Belarus consonant efforts focused on spiritual and moral development of the society along with the support of reading traditions, national literature and book printing.

Every year thousands of guests from all over Belarus and foreign countries participate in this event.

One of the key events of the Day of  Belarusian Writing Language is the Republican scientific and educational expedition “The Road to the Holy Places with the Holy Fire from the Holy Sepulchre”. The expedition passes through the cities and villages of several regions of the country and ends in the city where the holiday is held.  

The program of the event includes international round table with the participation of foreign writers, the final round of the Republican contest of young readers “Living classics”, a scientific and practical conference dedicated to the history of the city where the holiday is celebrated, entertaining quizzes, quests, and the Festival of books and press.

In addition to that, visitors and participants of the Day of  Belarusian Writing Language will see the expositions of museums and libraries, masters of folk art, artists, etc. placed at various sites of the city.

On the opening day of the festival, the ceremony “National literary award” will be held on the main stage.
